How can I get from Granada to the Sierra Nevada?

We are going to Granada at the end of October and would like a day out in the Sierra Nevada, either by public transport or on an organised excursion. Does anyone have any suggestions as to the best way to do this? We don't want to drive - we prefer public transport

1. its not far so hire a car and take in the sites its a beautiful place, not sure if there will be any snow at this time though, you can get day trips by coach up there, more popular when the snow there though, i live in marbella and drive there in ski season once you get to granada you will have a clearer picture try www.absolutespain.com its a blog for x pats across spain ask the question on there i am sure some on on there will have the answers have a great time
2. The best way to get to the Sierra Nevada ( Which is the name of a small Town / Ski resort aswell as the Mountain range itself ) is via car. You should be able to hire a car for the day from as little as 20 euros depending on it's size. The drive from Granada should be roughly 1 Hour and takes in some breathtaking scenery as you climb up the mountain range and through some tiny villages such as Gaudix. Once you are at the summit of the Sierra Nevada be sure to continue your tour down the other side of the mountain to a tint collection of Andalusian " White Villages " called the Alpujarras. Be careful with the road conditions and check a weather report before you set out as this is Spain's highest Mountain and the weather in October can be unpredictable.
3. If you are staying in a hotel, they will sort that out for you. If you aren't staying in a hotel, just go in one and ask.
4. I was up in the Sierra Nevada last month, we drove up, well worth the drive, although i know you don't want to do that. I didn't see a single bus on the road up from Granada i'm afraid. I am sure there will be coaches that take people up though. It most likely depends on the time of year-come the ski season (December-April on most high altitude resorts) there should be buses going up. On another note, if you are wanting to get to the Highest point in the Sierra, check that all the ski lifts are running, as when we got there, we were planning on getting a lift half way up the Veleta(second highest point) and walking up. Only one of the lifts was open, so we walked 4 hours up a very steep ascent, and suffered the altitude. It's well worth a visit though. Lewis **With regards to a previous post by someone, saying you could hire a car for as little as 20 euros a day- i'm afraid i can't see this happening anymore, last month hire companies were wanting 5000 euros for a 1.2 corsa for 9 days. Almost all hire companies has got rid of a significant amount of their cars.**
