  1. If you have to ask that you are not experienced enough for that. Start with day hikes and then work to overnighters and work your way up. It is a skill set like anything else and those idiots on TV make it look easy.
  2. Kyle's right. Being there for that much time takes experience. You shouldn't just jump right into it. There are a LOT of factors. Think about what the climate change will be over that much time. That alone can ruin your plans. Start smaller.
  3. You could get trapped there in the snow. It's dangerous. Don't tell me you were thinking of going by yourself?!? You should contact the Sierra club. They can give you some advice.
  4. If your hiking and camping i suggest taking the following items: 1. depending on the time your out there I suggest about 3 liters of water for every day. If you need to drink from a water source I recommend finding a small clear fast moving stream and checking it out for dead animals and what not. Next take a empty bottle with a rag over the top and fill it to the top. Next throw it onto the fire and let it boil for 10min 2. For food bring a mre for each day incase hunting/ gathering goes down hill. 3. Have at least a pistol that is either 9mm, 45acp, or 357 magnum. Have about three reloads of self-defense ammunition and a cleaning kit. A 12ga shotgun would be the best long gun since you can hunt just about anything with it. 4. A folding knife with a serrated edge( sog trident) for self-defense and a fixed bladed knife as a work horse. 5. Tools such as a hatchet and a multi-tool. 6. Medical kit/ trauma kit with Hygiene supplies 7. Duct tape, a few large trash bags, long zip-ties, whistle, sleeping bag, glow sticks, 60 lumen or more led flashlight with extra batteries, small tent or tarp with straps, rope, extra socks, clothing, flare, space blanket, pillow, towel, hot-hands, hand towel, SAS survival handbook, identification, money, shemguah, etc
  5. The first thing you need is something you can't buy in a store --Wilderness Survival Skills! If you need to ask a question like this one, you don't have them, and you could end up very dead in the middle of nowhere. Before you take off on your roaming in the gloaming, you should take some Survival Courses to learn what you need to know how to do in order to survive. Doc
  6. Man I agree with these guys when they say that if you gotta ask the question then you can't possibly understand the answer. I can tell you from experience that it is a huge leap going from being an experienced solo summer backpacker to being an inexperienced solo winter backpacker Even in the relatively civilized East hiking the Adirondacks or the Whites in winter is a huge challenge ,doing the High Sierra in winter has got to at least square or possibly cube that degree of difficulty I remember once in my younger days I walked across a frozen lake that I mistook for a meadow because snow does weird things to landmarks I heard the ice crack and luckily the Kelty pack that i was wearing had one of those old fashioned airline style quick release metal buckles so i could quickly drop my pack and thereby saved myself from drowning in freezing water . Also luckily I was only 8 miles from the trail-head so i just jogged at double time to my car,got into some warm dry clothes , drove to a motel and spent an hour in a hot shower trying to get warm again. Went back the next summer and recovered my pack from the lake/pond If something like that happened to you in the Sierra you would probably die Then there are things like post-holing to worry about , how to keep water liquid in a cold environment and how to keep yourself properly hydrated in a cold dry enviroment that will suck moisture out of you as fast if not faster than a hot dry environment will>Seriously The bottom line is that you both need to learn and practice your craft in relatively safe environments before you move out and explore places that won't think twice about killing you for being ignorant or proud
